The Amarillo Federation of Teachers began during the 1988-1989 school year. TFT President John Cole met with just a handful of members in Amarillo and discussed the reasons why Amarillo needed a local chapter of the Texas Federation of Teachers. We became an organizing committee of the Professional Educators Group immediately. After several years of recruiting more members and establishing our structure, our organizing committee became a chartered local in October of 1995. The Amarillo Federation of Teachers represents teachers and other school employees in the Amarillo Independent School District. Our local staff person also is available to assist other TFT members in smaller districts in the Texas Pandhandle.
